A prayer for the one who is gone
God, You are the One who stays. The people I love are never beyond Your sight, even when they're beyond mine — You hold every life I have ever loved, and You do not lose what You hold.
So I can say this plainly tonight: I just miss them. I don't have polished words — just the empty chair, the quiet house, the moment I reach for the phone before I remember.
I'm not asking You to explain it. I'm asking You to let this grief do its deeper work — deepen my love instead of ending it, and soften me toward everyone else carrying an empty chair of their own.
Hold what I can't hold. Carry what keeps dropping out of my hands. I release them into Your keeping — not because the love is finished, but because Your hands are stronger than mine. When the grief comes in waves, don't let me drown in it; when it goes quiet, don't let me mistake the quiet for forgetting.
Thank You for the time that was real. Thank You that love doesn't become nothing just because someone is gone from my sight. I'll keep coming back to You with this — tonight, and every night it still hurts — and I'll keep thanking You in the middle of it. Stay close, Lord. That's the whole prayer. Stay close. Amen.
